Niagara Falls’ One and Only Springlicious

image001One of the events area residents look forward to the most each and every year is downtown Niagara Falls’ ultimate festival: Springlicious. Held this year from Friday, May 29 through Sunday, May 31, the festival showcases area food, beer, wine, and entertainment all nestled along old downtown’s famous Queen Street.

Last year’s Springlicious brought out more than 30,000 people, and this year looks to be even bigger and better. If you’re planning a trip to Niagara and aren’t entirely settled on when you should come, pick the last weekend of May, and experience a side of the city you’ve never seen before.

How It Started

One of the most historically important parts of the city of Niagara Falls is the Q District, or Queen Street. For much of the past, Queen Street enjoyed a vibrant economy with unique and busy stores, beautiful architecture, and plenty of business, but as people moved out into the suburbs and the downtown economy shifted away from that area, Queen Street found itself a bit forgotten, and the area fell into a bit of neglect and disrepair. Lately, however, the Q District has been going through a revitalization and renaissance, in large part, thanks to the Celebrate Old Downtown Community Corporation, a non-profit that’s bringing many events like Springlicious to the old downtown area in hopes of enriching people’s knowledge and experience of that storied part of town, so that it can become integral to the life of the city and region once again.

Springlicious 2015

image003Back for its 9th year in a row, this year’s Springlicious is going to expand on last year’s successes. Because it bills itself as a Food, Fun, and Music festival, there is heavy emphasis on all three. This year’s festival will have three stages of live music all weekend long, as well as an army of food trucks, artisans, merchants, and more who will all be hawking their fabulous wares to any willing festival-goers.

On-hand will also be a family-friendly carnival, compliments of Magical Midway Carnival and Amusements. There will be rides aplenty and potentially prize-winning games — if you’re skilled enough — that should please just about anyone. All-day ride passes will be available for just $20 for that special group of people whose foray into carnival rides doesn’t leave them green at the gills. The big news in music is that this year’s headliner for the festival is British Columbia’s alternative rock band, 54-40. For over 30 years, the band has been playing together, and they have enjoyed wide appeal, popularity, and commercial success in Canada, the United States, and beyond. To date, they have released over 13 albums, three of which have gone Platinum and one that has been certified Gold.

If you’ve been wondering about the best way to ring in the transition from spring to summer, make your plans to travel to Niagara for the last weekend in May. The best in Canadian fun, food, hospitality, and music will be on display in one of Niagara Falls’ best and most historic parts of town.
