Winter Festival of Lights Golf Tournament

image001Every holiday season in Niagara Falls features one of the biggest holiday lighting events in the world: The Ontario Power Generation Winter Festival of Lights. Running from the middle of November through the middle of January every year, the festival features over 3 million sparkling lights that cover a three-mile route, include scores of residential and commercial buildings and yards. It’s one of the best known holiday attractions in all of North America and over 1.5 million people venture to Niagara every year to experience it.

Of course, illuminating 3 million lights over the course of two months isn’t a cheap endeavor, and while enjoying the Winter Festival of Lights is completely free, donations are gratefully accepted. In order to help offset some of the cost of the yearly holiday event, a popular golf tournament sprang up 21 years ago: The Winter Festival of Lights Golf Tournament.

The Tournament

Held this year on Tuesday, June 16, at Whirlpool Golf Course, up to $10,000 of prizes are available across a number of categories at this scramble format and double-tee tournament. Groups of four can register for $195, and businesses and individuals are needed to supply hole sponsorships and hole contest sponsorships. Depending on the kind of golfer you are, you may find yourself in the running for a number of contest prizes, including:

  • Closest to the pin
  • Hole-in-one
  • Longest drive
  • And more!

Registration includes a welcome gift, lunch, 18 holes of golf, a golf cart, a classic barbecue steak dinner, and a live auction. It’s a day of fun that gives back in a big and meaningful way to help the city keep the lights on during the holidays, and it takes place on one of the area’s best golf courses.

Whirlpool Golf Course

image003A public course, Whirlpool Golf Course is one of Canada’s best-rated and most popular courses. Owned and operated by the Niagara Parks Commission, it enjoys a Four Star rating from Golf Digest and is set against the Niagara Gorge and the Niagara River Whirlpool, making it a beautiful course as well.

Designed by Stanley Thompson, the renowned golf course architect, Whirlpool Golf Course has been operating for almost 65 years, and in 1997, it underwent renovations that have improved the storied course even more. Numerous tournaments have been played at Whirlpool over the years, including the Canadian Tours’ Tour Championship, The Niagara Parks Amateur, and The Niagara Classic. Over a million rounds of golf have been played there, too, and if you love to hit the links, there are few reasons as helpful to the Niagara region as the Winter Festival of Lights Golf Tournament.

Whether you’re planning a trip to Niagara Falls for business or pleasure, if you’re a golfer, grab three of your friends, and make sure to visit over June 16 to take in one of the area’s finest courses amidst a fundraiser for one of the area’s most beloved and famous attractions.
